Feeling Stuck

When Following the Rules Starts to Hold You Back

When we’re young, we learn one big lesson: follow the rules.

Sit still.

Raise your hand.

Do your homework exactly the way the teacher wants it.

Don’t color outside the lines.

And honestly, we get good at it. We learn how to listen, how to follow directions, and to do things “the right way.” It helps us do well in school and earn adults’ trust.

It makes life feel safe.

But here’s the part no one tells you:

The rules that help you in school don’t always help you find yourself.

Because you can’t discover who you are by only doing what other people say.

You can’t achieve your dreams by waiting for permission. You’re not able to grow into your real self by staying inside someone else’s lines. It’s impossible to build your future by following rules that were made for someone else’s benefit.

Finding yourself is different.

It’s messy, personal, full of trying, failing, exploring, and asking your own questions. It’s about noticing what feels right to you, not what earns a gold star.

School teaches you how to follow directions. Life teaches you how to listen to your heart.

And at some point, you have to choose which voice you want to follow.

And if you want help figuring out who you really are — not who the rules told you to be — the Cheerful Road Journal App gives you a place to practice that. Each day, you can write about what feels true to you, what you’re curious about, and what you want to try next. It helps you listen to your own voice instead of everyone else’s, so you can slowly build a life that actually fits you.

All of the life lessons that you’ve learned in the past are important.
